Growing the Internet Internet Governance

ISOC members @ ICANN 48: challenges on Internet Governance

The Internet Society held its usual ISOC@ICANN meeting yesterday and I had the pleasure of welcoming the 100th Chapter: Paraguay.

We had an interesting discussion on the challenges ahead in the rapidly evolving Internet governance landscape. Our CEO and President, Lynn St. Amour gave an update on what happened since the Montevideo I* meeting. Her presentation isĀ available here.

The high level notes to take away from the meeting are:

  • ISOC should be bold and proactive
  • Regional priorities differ and must be addressed
  • ISOC communities are eager to work together and will so long as the resources, leadership and collaborative opportunities are ther
  • /1Net is confusing and potentially more distracting than helpful. Brazil meeting may be useful but IGF has legitimacy and lineage. Should be strengthened
  • Engage governments directly through chapters and help position them as go-to Internet experts
  • Develop more with Organizational members and Universities around the world
  • Think and act creatively. Become adept at crowd-sourcing; market virally
