Asia-Pacific

The Asia Pacific bureau works with chapters to cultivate expert communities in developing countries, collaborate with regional policy makers, and build access for unserved and underserved communities.

We work in the following sub-regions:

  • East Asia
  • Oceania
  • South Asia
  • Southeast Asia

Regional focus

Community empowerment

In a bid to promote Internet usage and innovation in remote towns and villages, the APAC Bureau undertakes workshops for marginalised communities–including women and indigenous minorities–on digital literacy, online content.

Infrastructure

Infrastructure

Focusing on rural connectivity, the APAC Bureau collaborates with local partners and community members in deploying and scaling up wireless mesh networks, and in advocating for the use of unlicensed spectrum for Internet connectivity.

Policy

Policy

The APAC Bureau is at the forefront of the advocacy for a bottoms-up and decentralised model of Internet governance in the region. It reaches out to key influencers within and beyond the core Internet community.

Capacity building

Capacity-building forms a crucial part of the APAC Bureau’s efforts to foster an open and sustainable Internet. In line with the Internet Society’s ‘smart development’ approach, it ensures that physical networks are built alongside the human capacity.

Technology

Standards & technology

The APAC Bureau actively engages with vendors, operators and service providers at gatherings such as the Asia Pacific Regional Internet Conference on Operational Technologies (APRICOT) and the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain Meetings to promote.

Get involved

By connecting the world, working with others, and advocating for equal access to the Internet, the Internet Society strives to make the world a better place.

Wireless For Communities

Wireless for Communities (W4C) provides last mile connectivity to rural and remote areas of the Asia-Pacific using wireless technologies.
