Highlights from ISOC Africa – July 2018


African Union Commission holds Cybersecurity workshop

The Internet Society Africa Regional Bureau (ARB) participated at the African Union Commission (AUC) Cybersecurity workshop, which took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 23-27 July 2018 and gave presentations on the Personal Data Protection Guidelines, Internet Infrastructure and Security Guidelines as well as the IoT and MANRS campaigns.

Building and strengthening our Community

ISOC Nigeria Chapter: participated actively in the 2018 Nigeria National Internet Governance Forum from 2-3 July 2018 and took the opportunity to speak about the Community Networks (CN) Campaign. The Internet Society supported the event with remote participation and livestreaming. More at:

ISOC Gambia Chapter: participated in the 2018 Gambia National Internet Governance Forum from 4-5 July 2018. The Forum was a good opportunity to talk about the AUC and the Internet Society Personal Data Protection Guidelines and CN Campaign. ISOC Uganda Chapter: published a statement on 11 July 2018 strongly condemning Uganda’s new tax on Over The Top services (OTTs). The Chapter called on the government to reconsider its decision. More at:

IETF Africa Initiative

From 14-20 July 2018, 5 ISOC African Chapters (ISOC Burkina Faso Chapter, ISOC Cameroon Chapter, ISOC Ghana Chapter, ISOC Nigeria Chapter and ISOC Namibia Chapter) successfully organized viewing for the IETF 102 Meeting (#IETF102) to promote the IETF and encourage more active participation from their respective countries.

The ARB supported the organization of these viewing hubs as part of the IETF Africa Initiative.

Supporting Regional and National Internet Governance Forums (IGF)

The West Africa Internet Governance Forum (WAIGF) 2018 took place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso from 26-27 July 2018. The Internet Society supported the event with funding, remote participation, livestreaming and other resources.

In addition, the 8th Benin National IGF which took place in Cotonou, Benin from 12-14 July 2018 was also supported by the Internet Society with content, remote participation tool and livestreaming. More at:

Promoting Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) in Africa

The Internet Society held a Peering & Interconnection and Technical Training in Zanzibar from 23-27 July 2018. The training was attended by 24 participants from the Ministry, ZIXP, Liquid Telecom and others.

Africa Domain Name System (DNS) Forum 2018

The ARB participated at the 6th Africa DNS forum which took place in Cotonou, Benin from 3-5 July 2018 and supported the event with content, funding and other resources. For more visit

The 9th African Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF2018@Iweek) will be held over a 3-day period in Cape Town. Hosted by the Internet Service Providers’ Association (ISPA), this year’s AfPIF will take place in conjunction with iWeek, South Africa’s leading Internet industry conference, which will run from 20-24 August 2018.
